7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller Wiring for a 2010 Honda Odyssey

Question:

Hello, I have a 2010 Odyssey with the dealer installed towing package. They only install a 4-pin connector at the hitch receiver but our trailer has brakes and a 7-pin connector. We have the old brake controller from our last Odyssey. Which parts would I need to fit the old controller into our new van? Also, I noticed in the writeup for this brake controller part#90885, they mention you needing a 4-pin plug. How can you control brakes with a 4-pin plug? My understanding was the 4-pins could only control lights and turn signals? I assumed we needed extra wiring run for the brake controller and 7-pin plug so I am a bit confused. Thanks,

First, you are correct, a 4-Way trailer connector only controls lighting functions. But when combined with the 4 and 7 Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7, it will provide a 7-Way trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle. Having a 4-Way or installing one makes the installation of the ETBC7 much easier because the 4-Way just plugs into the back of the ETBC7, reducing the amount of wires that need to be hardwired.

So to install the brake controller in your 2010 Honda Odyssey, you will just need # ETBC7, since the van already has a 4-Way. The ETBC7 kit comes with everything needed to provide a 7-Way connector and wiring for he brake controller. I have included links to FAQ articles explaining the installation of an ETBC7 and a link to a video that shows a typical installation.
