Recommended Components To Add Electric Brakes To 1997 Coleman Destiny Pop-Up Camper
Question:
Good Morning, I looking to add electric brakes to my 1997 Coleman by Fleetwood Destiny Series Santa Fe pop-up camper. I have went through everything and just want to make sure that I have ed all compatible parts that I will need for my installation. The trailer does have what I believe to be a Dexter axle without EZ Lube. It does have 4 bolt flanges behind the hubs. It has 13inch wheels, with a 5lug pattern. I believe the current hubs are Unique, with L44649 Bearings inner and outer, and a 13194 Seal. The parts I have ed are the following: Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 7inch - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 2,000 lbs - AKEBRK-2 Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 2,000-lb Axles - 7inch Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 - L44649 Bearings - AKHD-545-2-2K Mounting Hardware for 7inch Brake Assemblies - BRKH7 Grease Seal - 13194 The trailer has an aux 12V battery, so I can add breakaway switch to that system. Are there any other items I may need that I am missing? Thank you,

It looks like you have really been spending some time putting together the components you need to install electric brakes on your camper. The # AKHD-545-2-2K hub and drum will work on your camper but you will need to replace the 10-9 seals included with the kit with # 13194 seals.
The brakes you mentioned, # AKEBRK-2 will work great with the hub and drum.
Since you said you have a 4-bolt brake flange the # BRKH7 brake mounting hardware will also work for you.
The breakaway kit I recommend is part # 50-85-315. This kit comes with a charger so you can use the aux battery on the trailer to supply enough power to keep the breakaway battery ready.
If your trailer did not come with brakes, you will need wiring and a trailer connector. for that I recommend part # HS381-9000. This kit includes a 7-way trailer connector and a junction box to make it easier to get everything connected. You will need brake wire to run on the trailer so you can use part # 10-2-1.
If you do not have one, you will need a brake controller in your 2012 Pilot. I recommend part # 90195. This is one of our most popular brake controllers because it is easy to set up and operate.
If you have a 7-way at the back of your Pilot you can use part # 3070-P to connect your brake controller to the vehicle. Just plug one end into the back of the # 90195 and the other end into the vehicle harness located beneath the dash to the left of the steering column near the emergency brake pedal/
If you do not have any trailer connector on your vehicle I recommend the T-One, part # 118558. This connects to the harness behind your rear bumper. You then need to install part # ETBC7. This plugs into the 4-way and you then need to run additional wiring to give you a working 4-way and 7-way at the back of your Pilot. I have attached a drawing that shows how the wiring is run for the # ETBC7 and the brake controller.
Last, when working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.
