How to Install an Electric Trailer Brake Controller on a 2008 Toyota 4Runner

Question:

the jumper harness that came with the 2008 4 runner has 5 cables black, green, green/yellow, white/black, and yellow. The tekonsha controller I have has 4 cables blue, while, red, black. I am pretty certain black to black, white/black to white, yellow to blue. Then I have two wires on the jumper harness green and green/yellow and one on the tekonsha red. How does this work?

If your 2008 Toyota 4Runner came with a factory 7-Way trailer connector, all you will need to connect the Tekonsha Voyager Brake Controller, # 39510, is to use harness # 3040-P. The port on the vehicle side should be located under the dash. I have included a link to a video showing installation on a similar vehicle for reference.

If the vehicle did not come with a trailer connector, you will need to first install a 4-Way, # 119178KIT, and then a 7- and 4-Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7. I have included links to instructions and videos that explain the installation.

Wiring color/function is not universal so matching color for color may not be a good idea unless you test the wiring using a circuit tester like # PTW2993. Test the vehicle side wires for function and connect accordingly. Black on the brake controller is 12-volt power, white is ground, blue is output to the trailer brakes, and red is for the stop light wire on the brake switch above the brake pedal.

On the Toyota, it is possible, not certain, that the black wire is 12-volt power, green/yellow is for the stop light, white with black is the ground, green is not used, and yellow would be trailer brakes. But again, testing is the only way to know for sure.
