Recommendation to Lower Hitch Cargo Carrier on 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Question:
We bought a 4-door Jeep Wrangler and are thinking about using a hitch-attached cargo carrier on long trips for things like coolers and rain-resistant equipment. But the spare tire on the gate wont clear the top rail of the carrier when the gate is opened. Can I use a specific dual hitch adapter or some other type of adapter to move the cargo carrier lower without sacrificing too much in weight capacity? The carrier holds up to 500 pounds mounted in the standard fashion Class III receiver and hitch. Even at a 50 loss 250 lbs we can still put coolers and camping gear back there, so I just want to know of any other potential problems.

I have a solution for you.
To lower your hitch-mount cargo carrier on your 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, I recommend using either the Roadmaster High-Low Adapter # RM-048-6 with a 6 inch drop or # RM-048-4 with a 4 inch drop, depending on how much of a drop you are needing to clear the spare tire. You will also want to make sure you do not run into any ground clearance issues with lowering the carrier.
As you mentioned in your question, the use of this or any similar hitch adapter is going to reduce the tongue weight capacity of your trailer hitch by 50%. If your Class III trailer hitch has a tongue weight capacity of 350 pounds, the use of this adapter will bring it down to 175 pounds. I recommend verifying the capacity of your trailer hitch, as their tongue weight limits can vary, even within the same class.
I have attached a short video demonstration of this adapter for you to check out.
