Recommended Replacement 4.80/4.00-8 Boat Trailer Tires

Question:

We need to replace the tires on our small boat trailer. The trailer is a 2015 HMDE. Its the size of a jet ski trailer, however we use it to haul our mini-Thunder. Mini-Donzi The tires on it are 4.80/4.00-8. We dont usually haul it very far, maybe 40 miles one way trips. We are planning to take it on a long trip from Miami to Tn in the summer. That being said, should we change to radials or stick with biased tires? What brand do you recommend? I have attached pics of our boat, trailer, and the current tires on it. Please advise.

Generally speaking, a radial tire is going to have a few improved differences when compared to a bias tire like what you currently have on your trailer. A radial tire will flex more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction and stability. They will also run a bit cooler, especially when the tire is under a heavy load. One advantage a bias tire does have over a radial is a stiffer sidewall, a feature that is useful for off road applications.

The 4.80/4.00-8 trailer tires we currently offer are all bias tires. Typically, radial tires are only seen on 12 inch or larger wheels. Assuming you have had no issues with your existing bias tires and considering the relatively light load on your trailer, I recommend simply sticking with bias tires like the Kenda K371 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10004 for a replacement tire on your trailer. This tire has a load range C with a maximum load of 745 pounds at 90 psi. This Kenda tire also comes with a limited 2-year warranty.

I have also attached a couple of articles on trailer tires and wheels that you may find helpful.
