Is there an advantage of one color over the others with this vent cover or is it a matter of personal preference?

The various colors of the Fan-Tastic Vent Ultra Breeze Trailer Roof Vent Covers like # FVU1500WH in white, # DMC38FR in black are mainly for aesthetics and will not function differently from each other. All of these vents, even the white cover because of the opaque thermoplastic construction, will limit and block sunlight coming in. So the cover you choose will simply be a matter of personal preference or based on the colors of your RV to get a nice match.
