Troubleshooting Low Voltage on 12 Volt Pin at 6-Way Trailer Connector

Question:

I have a 2004 Silverado 3/4 ton diesel hooked up to a 2004 4 star gooseneck horse trailer. All lights are operable except interior overhead and exterior flood. The center pin only reads 5 volts, should be 12. Not sure what the problem is. Any suggestions?

Are you testing the pin with the truck running? If so, and you're still not getting 12 volts it's likely the wiring is damaged somewhere. You can trace the wire throughout the truck or you can bypass it.

Bypassing the wire completely is probably the easier route depending where the issue is. To bypass it run 10 gauge wire using # 10-1-1, which is sold by the foot, from the 6-way trailer connector to the positive battery post. You'll want to use a circuit breaker, # 9510, near the battery.
