Expert Reply:
The Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET does allow you to back up without removing the spring bars. However, I do still recommend removing them if you are going to be making any sharp turns while reversing to relieve the tension that the installed system provides.
Just be sure when choosing a weight distribution system that you are using your total tongue weight when looking at the system's weight capacity. Your total tongue weight will be the sum of both the tongue weight of your fully loaded trailer and also any weight behind the rear axle of your towing vehicle. You will want this number to fall somewhere in the middle of the tongue weight capacity range of the weight distribution system you choose.
The Equal-i-zer System # EQ37060ET has a tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs - 600 lbs. If you need something with a greater range, I recommend the Equal-i-zer system # EQ37100ET with a tongue weight capacity of 600 lbs - 1,000 lbs. For an even higher range you can use the Equal-i-zer # EQ37140ET with a 1,000lbs - 1,400 lbs tongue capacity. Both of these higher rated systems also allow backing up without removing the spring bars.
I have included a demonstration video as well as a helpful article about weight distribution systems.
