Using a 3-Wire Brake Controller on a 2016 Ram 1500
Question:
I have a brake controller that was in my jeep Grand cherokee and it only has three wires, a red hot ,a white for ground and the blue for the brakes. can I use the #3024-p adapter to plug into my 2016 ram 1500and just use the three wires? what is the black wire for?

The black wire is generally what supplies power to the controller. White is ground, blue is output to the brakes, and the red is connected to the stop light switch so that the trailer brakes are engaged when you press the brake pedal in the tow vehicle.
There are some 3 wire brake controllers that essentially use the red wire circuit and black wire circuit on one wire. My guess is this is what you have. I contacted Tekonsha about whether the # 3024-P will work for you and there isn't any known reason why it can't. With that being said, Tekonsha did recommend against using the 3 wire controller completely and replacing it. They said the one you have is not their product (If it was you would have a black wire instead of red wire) but even if it was they wouldn't even recommend using it. The three wire design is outdated and wasn't the best setup in the first place.
To work well with the # 3024-P in your Ram I suggest the Prodigy P2 # 90885. It's one of our top sellers because of it's reliability and ease of use.
