Can a Trailer Tail Light with License Plate Light Still be Legally Used if the Plate is Elsewhere

Question:

Greetings from the UK, It appears that all the LH driver side rear combination tail lights seem to have a licence plate light built-in...... But what if the licence plate CANNOT be mounted directly under the light? In our case, due to the trailer structure, the licence plate will have to be mounted on the LHS of the bodywork just to the right of the LH light and would be illuminated with separate licence plate lights. Can the LH light eg. STL109RB still be used in this scenario, where its licence plate light is effectively doing nothing other than illuminating the road beneath? Or, can the RH light the one without licence plate light be flipped over and also used on the LH side of the trailer? Perhaps by rotating the rear facing lens through 180 degrees so that the Topinch marking is still at the top of the fitting - sounds simple but certification might prohibit using the fitting upside-down. Or, is there another light fitting/solution to this problem? I need to ensure all the trailer lighting meets the FMVSS and CMVSS 108 lighting requirements, hence the detailed question. Looking at your very informative website, I think Im OK on the rest of the trailer lights. Any advice you can give is much appreciated. PS. Do you ship to the UK? No problem if you dont, we can get stuff shipped to our contacts in the US, who will forward to us in the UK, Thank you and kind regards

Helpful Expert Reply:

The license plate light on trailer tail light # STL109RB turns on with the running lights. It certainly will not hurt anything if it has nothing but the ground to illuminate and it would still be legal.

You would not want to use the right hand side light, # STL108RB, on the left hand side if you want to ensure that you won't violate any of the lighting requirements for trailers. So go forth with confidence using # STL109RB on the left side!

We can ship to US military bases overseas. Otherwise having your US contacts ship them to you is the way to go.
