Can Dual Receiver Adapter Be Used for a Spare Tire and Cargo Carrier with Scooter on Class C RV
Question:
I have a chev class c motor home by Forest River Sunseeker with a 2 inch receiver that I currently use for the mounted spare tire tire is 29 made by Curt. Would like to use the top receiver for the spare tire and the lower receiver for an aluminum carrier used to carry a gogo 3 wheel scooter which weighs about 85 pounds. The carrier is aluminum with a ramp from ground that folds up once the scooter is loaded purchased from Northern Freight which mounts into a 2inch receiver. I want to make sure that the duel receiver will be safe to carry the tire in the top receiver. Thanks for your response..

Dual receiver # MPG544 has a tongue weight capacity of 400 pounds. Provided that the combined weight of the spare tire and carrier and the scooter and carrier is under 400 pounds it will be within the capacity of the receiver.
However, the use of an adapter like this reduces the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent. Check the hitch for a sticker that lists its capacity and divide by 2 to determine the reduced capacity. If the reduced capacity is still greater than the combined weight of everything used in the hitch then you will be good to go.
I do recommend additional support for the cargo carrier to reduce the amount of movement of the accessories in the hitch. For that you can use Curt stabilization strap # 18050 or ratchet straps, rope, anything that will reduce movement.
