Helpful Expert Reply:
The only model of the 2005 Subaru Outback Wagon that can be flat towed is a 5 speed manual transmission with AWD and the H4 2.5L engine.
If this is the model you have then you will be able to flat tow this vehicle with 4 wheels on the ground.
First thing to get for your vehicle is a base plate kit like the Roadmaster # 917-3.
Next you will need a tow bar that is rated for your vehicle. A tow bar like # RM-576 that includes the safety cables is a great choice.
The Tow Ready # 63180 has a maximum speed rating of 45mph, so I do not recommend this for your setup.
Some other items to consider when flat towing are:
Towing lights like # RM-15267
Braking system like # SM99251
A charge line kit to keep your battery from being drained # RM-156-25
and a
High/Low adapter (this will depend on your setup; see Help Article I've linked)
Be sure to check your owner's manual for any procedures and restrictions your vehicle may have.
I have linked the above mentioned products as well as a few Help Articles on towing for your convenience.
