Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2005 Dodge Dakota with Factory Tow Package
Question:
I have a 2005 Dakota - 6-cyl - tow package - I plan to purchase a 20 x 8 enclosed cargo trailer. Live in Tucson - AZ and will be going up mountains, sometimes - will use the trailer about 30 times per year.

For a brake controller to use with your 2005 Dodge Dakota and cargo trailer, you can use any controller since they are not vehicle specific. I recommend using a proportional brake controller, like the Tekonsha P3, # 90195, that you have referenced. Proportional controllers offer the best and safest braking and reduce wear on both the towing vehicle and trailer brakes. The P3 would be good for the mountains because the self-leveling feature constantly checks and readjusts itself 400 times per second.
The P3 has numerous other features that make it a good choice. It has an easy to read and understand LCD display, on board diagnostics, and can be used with either electric or electric over hydraulic brakes. On your truck with a tow package, # 3020-P, which is the vehicle specific wiring harness that plugs into a port on your Dakota. The port is located under the dash near the floor between the emergency brake pedal and steering U-joint. There is a little panel with a bunch of wires going into it. The harness plugs into the top right port.
I have included a link to the installation details for this brake controller below. I have also included a link showing a video installation on a similar vehicle as well as an FAQ on brake controllers.
