It is perfectly normal for a 5th wheel hitch head to tip left or right when it is not coupled to the trailer's king pin. Your B&W Companion hitch # BWRVK3600 has a fully-articulated pivoting head that will provide easier hitching thanks to its range of motion; this range of motion also allows the head to lean to one side when not held up by the king pin.
