Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser

what bike carrier to use to hold 4 bikes weighing 40 lbs each, on an FJ cruiser tow hitch

For your 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser the Thule T2 Pro XTR part # TH69TX would be a great choice, however, it would not stick out far enough past the rear spare on the vehicle without interference. You could measure, but it has a distance from the hitch pin hole of 7 inches when in use and 5 inches when folded.
For a rack with more clearance, check out the Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack for 4 Bikes - 2" Hitches - Wheel Mount
Item # Y02443-2 that has a distance of 12" when in use and 7" when folded.
If you still need more room, I suggest the Yakima FourTimer Bike Rack for 4 Bikes - 2" Hitches - Frame Mount
Item # Y02469. It has a distance of 17" when in use and 12" when folded.
I have included videos of these racks. You will be able to make a decision once you measure the distance from the center of your hitch pin hole to the back of your spare.
This is one of the nicest bike racks on the market as it only will touch the bikes at the tire as well. Check out the review video I attached too.
