Recommendation for a Hitch Mounted 4 Bike Rack

Question:

Im looking to buy a hitch carrier, and i live in Brooklyn so the carrier needs to be sturdy for long rides and also easy to install and take apart as it is not something i would want to leave on the street. since i will be buying this once and for many years i want the best hitch carrier and am not concerned about the cost...what would you recommend?

I will be happy to help you select a bike rack. There are a couple of important things to consider first. One is the size of the trailer hitch. Is it a 2 inch or 1-1/4 inch receiver. Next is the clearance required to clear the rear bumper or spare tire (if mounted on the rear). You will need to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole out to clear the rear of the vehicle. Also, a 4 or 5 bike rack loaded to capacity will be heavy. You will need to make sure the tongue weight capacity on your trailer hitch is rated high enough for the rack and the bikes.

As far as features, durability, and style, I think the Thule Hitching Post 4 Bike Hitch Mount Bike Rack, part # TH934XTR is one of the better 4 bike racks available. It has frame mount anti-sway cradles and an anti-rattle hitch pin. An optional lock for the hitch pin, part # THSTL2 is also available. This rack will fit in 1-1/4 or 2 inch hitches. The rack also tilts down to allow greater access to the rear of the vehicle. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the upright bar on the rack is 11-7/8 inches. I have included a link to a video review of this rack.

To carry womens bikes or bikes with sharply angled top tubes or step-through frames, using a frame adapter like part # TH982XT is recommended. The adapter spans the distance between the seat post and the handle bar gooseneck, and provides a level attachment point to the bike rack so the bike has greater ground clearance and is not carried at an angle.
