How to Determine the Correct Ball Mount to Tow a Trailer with a 2004 Ford Escape

Question:

This hitch looks like it sits very low. Will I need a ball mount with a rise of a few inches? Thanks

You would not necessarily need a ball mount with a rise. It all depends on what is needed to make the trailer and vehicle as level as possible when the trailer is connected to the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75118. The recommended ball mount is # C45010. It has a 3/4-inch rise and 2-inch drop. There are 2 measurements you will need to take in order to determine the correct ball mount and rise or drop that will be needed.

First, park your 2004 Ford Escape on level ground. Then you would measure from the ground to the top of the receiver tube opening. Next, with the trailer on level ground and the tongue level, measure from the ground to the bottom of the coupler.

I have included a link to the installation details for the trailer hitch. It is difficult to take the measurements unless the hitch is installed. But there is a drawing in the instructions that shows the position of the hitch when it is installed. I have also included a video on a similar vehicle that should help some.

If the hitch height is higher, subtract the coupler height from the hitch height to get the drop needed.

If the coupler height is higher, subtract the hitch height from the coupler height to get the rise needed. I have included an FAQ article below on selecting the correct ball mount. I have included a link to the ball mount main page below.
