Troubleshooting No Right Brake Light Signal on a Trailer with 4-Way Wiring Harness

Question:

I am trying to trouble shoot a problem with my trailer wiring. it has the 4-pin hook-up. everything on it is working except for the right brake. the right light blinks for the turn signal but does not illuminate for breaks. the left light is working perfectly fine. the running lights/tail-lights are also functioning fine.any ideas?

It sounds like one of two situations. The first thing I would check, is the taillights connection to ground. Most taillights are grounded through their mounting hardware. Make sure that there is no paint or corrosion keeping the light from making a good ground connection. You should also check out the taillight bracket connection to the trailer frame. If the bracket is bolted to the trailer frame there may be rust and corrosion inhibiting the ground connection.

If a ground issue is not the problem, use a circuit tester, item # PTW2993 if needed, and check the trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle, without the trailer connected. If there is not a brake light signal in the connector where the green wire goes into the other side, then the problem is on the vehicle. There may be a blown fuse on the tow package circuit, or you may have a converter box installed on the vehicle. If there is no blown fuse and you have a converter installed, check the wires going into the converter with the circuit tester for the following functions.

Brake Signal on red wire, left turn signal on yellow wire, right turn signal on green wire and taillight signal on brown wire. The white wire should be connected to a suitable ground. You may also have a power wire that runs to the vehicle battery. This circuit should be fine since the other functions are working correctly.

If the wires going into the converter are not coming out correctly and the right brake signal not working on the trailer connector side, then there is a problem with the converter box, and it may need to be changed.

Finally, if the vehicle checks out, you will have to test the green wire from the trailer side connector, at short intervals all the way back to the right-side taillight. You should be able to find the problem in this manner.
