How to Pick Out a Weight Distribution System for a 2012 Toyota 4Runner

Question:

I have tried to find a weight distribution hitch for a 2012 Toyota 4Runner. If I go through your vehicle search, nothing is listed. However, I somehow have located w/d hitches through a back door in your site which seem to be listed for that very vehicle. Whats up?

Weight distribution systems aren't vehicle specific so we don't list them in our vehicle fitguides. I am not sure what pages you found, but I suspect you found regular trailer hitches confirmed to fit your 2012 Toyota 4Runner like the part # 13534 made by Curt.

If that is what you are looking for that hitch would fit and would work well. I attached an install video for this hitch on a 2012 Toyota 4Runner just like yours.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

Based on the towing capacities for the Curt hitch I mentioned a system like the part # RP66541 would be a great option. It has a tongue weight range of up to 800 lbs and would work well for you.

For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.
