As long as the strap or wire cable you are using is rated properly for your winch, either one will work well with the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch with TUFFPLATE Finish # DL14527 that you referenced. Using a strap or cable will come down more to personal preference.

The wire cable will allow you to have a longer lead and will not offer any amount of give. Using a strap can limit the length of the lead. If you will be winching items that need to have the lead wrapped around them, the strap will be gentler on your cargo than the wire rope. Another factor to consider is that the wire rope is more difficult to cut than a strap.

For a strap, the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook # DL24249 is a great option. This strap is 25 feet long, has a break strength of 4,000 pounds, and is designed for use on winches with capacities up to 2,600 pounds. The strap rating needs to be 150 percent of the winch rating, so this strap is rated more than high enough for the 1,600 pound capacity of the # DL14527 winch.

If you'd rather use a wire cable, the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook # DL24104 is a great choice. This cable is 1/4 inch in diameter and 50 feet long with the safety hook. The # DL24104 wire cable is designed to be used on hand winches with capacities up to 3,500 pounds so it will work well for the # DL14527 winch.

If you would like to let me know the environment in which you will be primarily using your winch, I will be happy to make a more specific recommendation for a strap or wire rope.
