Recommendations for Tire Load Range and Construction for a 2002 Coleman Cheyenne Camper

Question:

I have ST175 80D 13 tires load range C on my 2002 Coleman Cheyenne camper. I recently blew one out. I was considering going to a load range D. Would this be a wise move? Should I consider radial tires? The one that blew was the newest tire on the camper.

There are several things to check out before making the decision to go with a heavier rated tire. First, the trailer weight should be checked. If the trailer is loaded over capacity and the wheel and tire combination is rated properly for the trailer suspension then going to a higher rated tire could cause the suspension to fail in another area.

Next, the condition of the tires should be inspected. Trailer tires tend to sit for long periods. Weather, sun and sitting in the same spot on the tire all effect the tire negatively. If your tires are showing signs of stress from these conditions they should be evaluated for replacement.

My recommendation for trailer tires is to use the tire that is properly rated for the trailer suspension, using a higher rated tire is alright but will not compensate for an overloaded trailer. Using a radial tire is the best way to go, ride quality and stability will be the best with a radial tire like the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C, item # AM10199.

Finally, with trailer tires, the tire should be inflated to the max load pressure listed on the tire. Trailer tires are designed to be ran at max load pressure to support the load required of them. Running at lower pressures can cause the tire to heat up and possibly fail.
