Will the Tow Ready Hitch Cargo Carrier # 63153 Allow a FJ Cruiser Rear Door to Open When Installed

Question:

Will I be able to open the rear cargo door on my FJ Cruiser with the 63153 in place or will I have to remove it to open the door. I see that the 63153 tilts up and it might be in the way.

The rails of the Tow Ready Hitch Cargo Carrier, item # 63153, are 5-1/2 inches tall and the shank on the carrier raises it 2-1/2 inches. Adding these together you get 8 inches of rise from the top of the receiver opening. To determine if the cargo carrier will allow the rear door to open on your FJ Cruiser you will need to do some measuring. Measure from the lowest part of the rear door straight down to the top of the receiver opening. If this measurement is 8 inches or more you will be able to use the carrier and swing the rear door open when it is empty.

One of my co-workers has a 2007 FJ so I went out to the parking lot and measured her vehicle. The distance from the bottom of the spare tire, which is the lowest part of the rear door, to the top of the receiver opening is 7 inches. In the case of her vehicle the carrier would hit the bottom of the spare if the door is swung open.

We do have a photo of this carrier from one of our customers, on his FJ. Click on the last picture below the main photo on the product page and then mouse over the picture to enlarge it. You can then see that the spare would most likely hit the top of the carrier when the rear door is opened.
