Can a Roof Cargo Box Have Thule Hardware Installed to Fit Wider Crossbars

Question:

Hello. I currently own a VW cargo box see link below that has a crossbar clamping system which uses 2 1/8inch ubolts. I would like to replace the oem clamping system with a yakima or thule clamping system which will fit a 2014 toyota highlanders areo style bars. My question is whether you have had to make this type of modification to a cargo box in the past and whether you have any suggestions on replacement parts. I would be happy to send pictures if that will help. Thank you in advance.

We have recommended in the past for people in similar situations as yours to modify their boxes and install the Hardware part # TH04997 which has much wider U-bolts compatible with factory and aftermarket aero style crossbars.

You basically would have to drill new holes in the box and then use all of the included hardware to secure the mount kit to the box. You will want to space the holes that you drill in the box the same distance apart as the crossbars of your roof rack.

For sealant to seal up the old holes you could use the part # LT37464.
