Will Going to Higher Capacity Trailer Tires Prevent Blowouts on a 5th Wheel Trailer

Question:

I have a 40 foot fifth wheel. 15500 lbs It came with Power king tires. I have had 3 blowouts last 2 trips. Last one out in the desert of Nevada. I load for dry camping which includes 3k generator and extra everything. Will these g rated tires solve some of my problems?

First, it is important to determine why you have had 3 blowouts on your 5th wheel trailer. The biggest enemy of a tire is heat so you need tires to run as cool as possible. Radial tires run cooler than bias ply tires but more importantly the trailer tires should also be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire sidewall.

Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire sidewall. This is because trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall than passenger vehicle tires to handle more vertical load. If under inflated the thicker sidewall generates excessive heat and can lead to failure.

Going to a higher capacity tire such as # TTWPRG235R16 which is a 235/85-16 rated for 4,400 pounds at 110 psi would allow for the tires to last longer since they will be stronger than the lower load ranges. However you will need to keep them at the maximum 110 psi. This tire is rated for 81 miles per hour whereas many other trailer tires max out at 65 miles per hour.

Another possible issue is overloading. If the trailer weighs more than the combined capacity of all of the tires then it will produce extra stress and heat on the tires. A similar problem can occur if the trailer rides high in the front which puts more of the weight on the trailer axles and less on the hitch/truck.
