How To Relocate Leaf Springs Above Trailer Axle for More Ground Clearance

Question:

On a normal setup with a 3500# axle, typically the axle is bolted to the top of the leaf spring. Can that be turned over, such that the axle is on the bottom of springs, giving me a little more fender clearance? I am concerned that the center pin may not fit, or something like that. The axle is a straight axle, not a axle or anything. Thank you.

Relocating the leaf springs from the underslung to the overslung position is very commonly done. Some folks refer to it as flipping the axle, which is a misnomer. You wouldn't want to actually flip the axle, because the axle has a slight upward bow or curve in it to provide the proper wheel camber. You'll be leaving the axle in its current configuration, but relocating the leaf springs.

A 3500 lb axle will usually be 2-3/8 inches in diameter. If that's the case with your axle, you can use the Dexter Over-Under Axle Conversion Kit, part # K71-384-00. These kits include new U-bolts and two new spring seats that should be tack welded into place. The kit is intended for use with double-eye suspensions only.
