Clearance Dimension for Installed Timbren Jounce Spring Kit on 2003 GMC Yukon XL
Question:
I recently purchased and installed the Timbren GMRC25C rear bumper stops for my 2003 Yukon XL. The parts were easy to install and are seated fully, but they are resting on the frame without a load. The directions say that there should be a 1/2inch to 1 1/2inch gap. Am wondering if you have any advice on what this means. The ride is almost too stiff and am wondering if this lack of gap means there are issues with the shocks. Any info or thoughts are appreciated.

It is not a problem for the Timbrens to rest on the axle but they may affect your unloaded ride characteristics as you note. You can try shifting around the cargo load in the truck to see if this changes the spacing between the spring and axle. As noted in the instructions, which are linked for you, there may be no visible gap when this kit is installed on certain medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.
All suspension enhancement kits for your 2003 GMC Yukon XL, whether air bags or jounce springs, are meant to be installed on a vehicle whose suspension is in good working order. These kits are not intended to replace the function of the vehicle's standard suspension but instead to support it when under load. It is certainly possible that your 12-year-old Yukon suspension is sagging a bit. And this would account for the springs resting on the frame rather than being slightly above it.
