Journey Brake Controller Activates Truck Brake Lights Randomly on 2007 Ford F-150
Question:
Hi! I have a 2007 ford f150 that came equipped with a journey 52650-6080 trailer brake controller. Recently the brake lights have started coming on erratically in the truck no trailer connectedI do not own one, and draining the battery. Tonight I waited in the cab for the lights to come on, and they did, and then went off again. This happened several times, and prior to them coming on I swear I could hear a relay cutting in, and the sound seemed to come from the journey controller. Q: I was wondering: Have you have ever heard of one of these controllers causing a problem like this? I searched online for brake light activity problems with 2007 f150s but could find none, so I expect if might have something to do with the aftermarket controller. I am prepared to remove it as I do not tow the unit came with the f150 from previous owner from whom I bought the truck. Q: Should I be able to just disconnect it from the vehicle, without any special tricks, besides making sure the wiring is protected against shorts? THANKS for your HELP!

It sounds like there is a potential short in the Journey brake controller. Since you do not own a trailer the fix is pretty easy. Just remove the brake controller! If you plan on towing a trailer with electric brakes in the future then it is likely that the controller will need to be replaced anyway based on the malfunction. I recommend not only removing the controller but also the wiring harness for the controller that is connected to the truck.
I recommend the P2 brake controller # 90885 with wiring harness # 3035-P to plug right into your truck. The P2 is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. I have linked a video showing a brake controller installation using harness # 3035-P.
