Question:
I have a pop-up camper with electric brakes, towing with a 2014 Subaru Outback. Small car, small trailer. Which brake controller do you recommend?

I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195. The P3 is a proportional brake controller that applies pressure to your trailer's brakes proportional to the pressure applied to your vehicle's brakes. The controller has an easy-to-read LCD display and provides user-friendly diagnostics to alert you of any issues. I have attached a review video of this brake controller for you.
Since your vehicle does not have a brake controller port, the wiring pigtail that comes with the controller will need to be spliced into your vehicle's wiring. The red wire will need to splice into the stoplight switch wire at the back of the brake pedal. This is the wire that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed. The blue wire will need to connect to the brake wire at the trailer connector at the rear of your vehicle. The black wire should be ran to a 30 amp circuit breaker # 38630 and then to the positive terminal on the vehicle's battery. The white wire should be ran to the negative terminal on the vehicle's battery. I have also attached a help article on installing a brake controller.
If you need a 7-way trailer connector at the rear of your Subaru, I recommend using the # ETBC7 Brake Controller Installation Kit. This kit will provide you with a 4- and 7-way trailer connector, the wiring needed to make connections at the vehicle battery and brake connector, and all of the hardware, connectors, and circuit breakers needed for installation. I have also attached a help article on installing the # ETBC7 kit.
