Should the Brake Lights of a Vehicle Illuminate with Manual Override of Brake Controller

Not necessarily. Some brake controllers will illuminate the brake lights of the vehicle when the override lever is applied. This depends on the controller and the way it was installed.

What you would want to do is test the brake output circuit of the trailer connector on your vehicle for voltage when the override lever and brake pedal is pressed with a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. If the voltage is there like it should be then the controller is just fine and wire up properly.

If the voltage isn't there you may have the brake output circuit and stoplight circuit swapped on the wiring of the controller. In this configuration the output circuit would be putting voltage on the stoplight circuit of your vehicle and activating your taillights.

With the brake controller plugged in without touching the brakes or the override there should be no voltage on the output circuit. Once you apply the brakes or hit the override you should see the voltage ramp up.
