Curt Trailer Wiring Harness Installation on a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Factory Tow Package

Question:

The directions from Curt show to plug the grey plug in on the passenger side. Your web site says the drivers side behind the spare. This harness comes with a grey plug that does fit the plug on either side, as well as a 4 pin black plug. This black plug does not have a matching plug anywhere on either side. Any ideas? I verified that my vehicle has the factory tow package via VIN # on a site that gives full dealer installed options. Copied from the Curt instruction pdf: If copying/pasting, eye-d r op this text to ensu r e a uniform look for all installation paragraphs. Before begining the installation , there may be a need to switch the turn signal wires on the T-connector depending on the year of the vehicle. 1995 Grand Cherokee: Left Turn signal yellow wire should be connected to the small black 4-pin plug. Right Turn signal green wire should be connected to the large grey plug. 1996-98 Grand Cherokee: Right Turn signal green wire should be connected to the small black 4-pin plug. Left Turn signal yellow wire should be connected to the large grey plug. 1. Open the rear hatch and remove the vehicles rear scuff panel. On the passenger side partially remove the rear trim panel to gain access to the vehicles taillight wiring harness. The harness will have connectors similar to those on the T-connector. 2. Behind the trim panel locate the small 4-pin connector taped to the existing wiring harness. Insert the T-connectors black 4-pin connector into the vehicles connector make sure it is fully ed with locking tabs in place. Separate the gray connectors being sure not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the T-connector end with the gray connectors in-between the separated connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully ed with locking tabs in place

On the product page for Curt trailer wiring harness # C55260 there is a section below Features called Installation that reads "This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your Jeep Grand Cherokee's factory tow package wiring harness, which is located behind the passenger's-side interior trim panel in your rear cargo area."

So based on this and the instructions you should be looking on the passenger's side. But sometimes the connectors you need to plug into are hidden. You may need to look forward, rearward, or below the area the connectors are supposed to be in to locate them. Some times they are wrapped in electrical tape or a loom and are not easily visible.
