Roof Weight Capacity of 2005 Toyota Highlander Fitted with Rhino-Rack Heavy Duty Roof Rack

Question:

Im looking at the rails in the link below for my 2005 Highlander. I just want to double check something. My Highlander manual lists the load limit for my roof carrier to be 100lbs. Your rack lists 200lbs. Is that because of the different crossbars? Thanks RB1250B-2

The Rhino-Rack Heavy Duty Roof Rack for your 2005 Toyota Highlander, which consists of parts # RB1250B-2 and # CXB, does carry a 200-lb weight rating. Your vehicle itself will also have a roof weight capacity that could be more, the same or less. Your manual's indicated weight limit of 100-lbs could be for an OEM roof rack, or it could be for the overall roof structure itself. If Toyota says the roof itself can handle 100-lbs and no more, then you will have to abide by that lower rating.

Whenever different parts of a system have different ratings, such as a hitch's tongue weight and that of the vehicle its attached to, then the lower-rated item determines the overall capacity. So if your roof can handle only 100-lbs then that is the limit even if the rack you install is rated for more.
