Will the Hitch Lock part # S64029 Stick Out Pretty Past Pin Hole of Hitch

once installed ~ 3-inches of the metal rod extends past the side of the hitch receiver: is this normal? Or do I need a shorter lock shorter rod?

As long as the 3 inches of the hitch pin that extend beyond the pin holes of your trailer hitch do not interfere with anything you would be totally fine. This is a pretty long hitch pin lock so what you described is pretty normal for people who use it.

I attached a picture we got from a customer that shows it sticking pretty far out to the side of a hitch opening.
