Towing a 5th Wheel Trailer with a 2015 Ford F-150 SuperCrew with 5-1/2 Foot Bed

Question:

I have a 2015 ford f150 supercrew with the 5 1/2 foot bed. if I install this rail kit, will the hitch that I already have work? I have Husky Fifth Wheel - HT31326-32220-59. Husky Silver Series 16K W 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ 16K Roller - Single Jaw - 16,000 lbs. I see it is not listed. if it wont work, why?

Your Husky slider hitch will fit installation kit # RP50087-58 for your 2015 Ford F-150 with 5-1/2 foot bed. However, you will not be able to slide the hitch back without removing the tail gate on the truck. Otherwise the pin box on the trailer would interfere with the tail gate. The other issue is that even if you slid the hitch back you would not be able to make tight turns without hitting the truck and trailer together.

Slider hitches do not offer enough travel to make tight turns in trucks with 5-1/2 foot beds. The bed is just too short. So what you would have to do is keep the hitch locked in the tow position and use a Sidewinder pin box on the trailer. The Sidewinder will move the pivot point of the trailer back 22 inches which is 13 inches more than the Husky slider.

To determine if a Sidewinder offers enough clearance there are some measurements you will need to take. Once installed the center line of the hitch will be 1 inch forward of the center of the rear axle. Measure from that point to back of the truck cab. Then add 22 inches for the Sidewinder. This measurement must be at least 4 inches more than half the width of the 5th wheel trailer to be able to make 90 degree turns.

Sidewinders only fit certain pin boxes. I would need to know the manufacture and model of the pin box. This information should be on a sticker or plate on the pin box. I have included a link to our help article on Sidewinders for you.
