Weight Distribution System Recommendation for 22 FT Wolf Pup Trailer with 550 LB Tongue Weight

Question:

I have a 22 foot wolf pup - dry tongue weight 438 lbs. - dry trailer weight 3588 lb. - gvwr 7438 lbs. - I bought a sherline tongue weight scale - filled water tank and weighted tongue at 550 lbs. You add a weight distribution hitch at around 100 lbs. The tongue weight will around 650 lbs. Never no exactly what else you may add to the camper or pulling vehicle that will add to the tongue weight. 100 lbs. or maybe 200 lb. its just hard to guess. Just looking for ideas on what size of weight distribution hitch I should buy with sway control. Live in Missouri and will headed to Colorado.

Thanks for the detailed information on your trailer!

As you know a key component to choosing the correct weight distribution system is knowing the trailer's exact tongue weight. Tongue weight is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. The weight of the weight distribution system would not be included in the calculation. The ideal situation is to have the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use. Doing so will give you a bit of leeway for varying loads.

The Strait-Line Weight Distribution System is a customer favorite because it is easy to use and it offers dual-cam sway control. The cams lock into position to hold the trailer steady which means sway is stopped before it can even begin. Since the tongue weight of your trailer is 550 lbs, you could go with part # RP66083. This is designed for tongue weights ranging from 400 - 800 lbs so you would have a 250 lb cushion for the extras. This system includes everything that you will need except for a hitch ball, # A-90 for 2 inch or # 19286 for 2-5/16 inch.

If you are looking for a system that is a bit more economical, take a look at the Pro Series Weight Distribution System, # PS49582, which is designed for 550 to 750 lb tongue weights or # 49570 for 700 to 1,200 lb tongue weights. These systems offer friction sway control which will reduce sway caused by winds, curving roads, and sudden maneuvers. Everything that you need is included, even a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball.

Safe travels!
