Connecting Aftermarket Brake Controller to Curt 5th Wheel Harness on 1997 Dodge Ram 3500
Question:
I have the factory towing package but it looks like I have an aftermarket trailer brake controller. how do I connect my brake controller to this harness

Since you have the factory tow package you should be able to simply plug the aftermarket brake controller into the factory connector. The connector is usually located under the dash near the emergency brake pedal.
If you have a 4 way connector at the rear of your Ram you will want to add a 7 way. You will need the Hopkins Adapter 4-Pole to 7-Pole and 4-Pole # 37185 to complete your wiring. The blue brake wire will not run all the way back to the 4-pole at the rear; it stops at the connector located under the driver's side wheel well. In order to finalize the installation you will need to splice into this wire and continue it back to the plug.
If you have a factory 7-way and his brake controller uses a plug-in style harness, then you can just plug the 5th wheel harness in and everything will work.
If you want to connect the brake controller wiring to the 5th wheel harness you can splice it in if you have a 4-way. You will need a pigtail harness # PK11998 and the connector # PK11893.
