How to Install a Brake Controller on RV Built on 2013 Ford E-450 Van Chassis

Question:

All info I have been able to access has indicated that brake controllers are only comparable with Ford F-450 up to a 2008 model year no mention of an E-450.. I need to know if there is an installation of a specific brake controller and whether I will need a compatable wiring harness. Any help will be appreciated

The 2013 Ford full size van chassis (E-series) can use brake controller wiring harness # 3034-P but only if it came with a factory 4-Way or factory 7-Way trailer connector. If it did not then a brake controller will have to be hardwired in.

If the vehicle has a factory 4-Way connector then the blue wire on the brake controller will have to be ran manually from the brake controller to the back of the vehicle and you will need to add # 37185 to add a 7-Way.

If the vehicle does have the factory 7-Way then you will not need to manually run the wire or add anything else.

If the vehicle does not have any trailer connector then you would first have to install one starting with a 4-Way. Since your model is an RV though it would not use the same tail lights as the actual E-450 van. So you would need a hardwire harness. If the vehicle has brake lights and turn signals combined on the same bulbs then use # 18252.

If the vehicle has amber turn signals on separate bulbs from the brake lights use # 119178KIT.

Then you will need to install installation kit # ETBC7. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.

For a brake controller I recommend the P2, # 90885, because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable.
