Locating Replacement Hub/Drum for 1990 Shorelandr Boat Trailer w/ Agricultural Hubs

Question:

I have a 1990 vintage Shorelandr custom roller tandem trailer which is registered as a B2555 model although it is clearly not a bunk model. It had a surge brake on the rear axle which must have seized up in the past because the backing plates were cut mostly off and the actuator and lines had rusted out. Unfortunately, while the axles have standard size brake mounting flanges, the spindles are 1.25inch x .75inch tapered agricultural spindles, and the drums have the associated LM11949 outer and LM67048 inner bearings. It is a 10inch x 2.25D drum with a 5 on 4.5 pattern. I have been unable to locate any drum brakes online that have this small a bearing set. Id really rather not replace the axles or spindles if I can avoid it and the existing drums are pretty trashed. Does this part exist the drums? Is there any reason I shouldnt use this setup on a tandem boat trailer?

Typically agricultural spindles are meant for low-speed applications, and not highway use so the axles they're used on wouldn't typically have brakes. This explains why you're having a hard time finding replacements. Boat trailer manufacturers are notorious for designing proprietary parts. The trailer manufacturer would be the best source for obtaining replacements.

Replacing the spindles would seem like an easy solution, but getting spindles correctly welded into place is a highly specialized skill. The spindle needs to be perfectly centered, or the trailer will never track correctly. This is why we recommend that folks simply replace the axle.

We stock a few common 2000, 2200 and 3500 lb axles that are actually surprisingly inexpensive. To see if any of them would be compatible, I'd need to know the hub face to hub face dimension and the distance between the spring centers. If you could reply with that information, I'd be happy to check to see if any of the axles we offer would be a replacement.
