How To Determine When Weight Distribution Is Needed

Question:

My tow vehicle is a 2010 F-150 long wheel base 4x4 with 5.4 V-8, built in trailer brake and a built in anti-sway feature. We tow a 2008 Fun Finder X189 FBS. It has a dry weight of 3,368 lbs. and GVWR of 5,855. We are careful not to overload it so I believe we are well within the safe towing weight limits of this trailer. Is it this rig safe to tow with this hitch and sway bar combination? Is a WD hitch needed?

This trailer is well within the towing capacity of your 2010 Ford F-150. The Curt Ball Mount # D320 and a sway control system will work for you, but it may not be enough to completely correct the sway of your trailer.

Since your trailer weight is more than 50 percent of your GVWR, you would benefit from a weight distribution system. This will not only more effectively correct trailer sway, but it will also correct any squat you may be experiencing.

I would recommend the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System # RP66083. This weight distribution system is engineered to stop sway before it begins. The system uses trunnion style bars, which offer the greatest ground clearance. This system is designed to work with trailers that have tongue weights between 400-800 pounds. The total tongue weight of your setup is important. This includes the loaded tow weight of your trailer and the weight of any cargo loaded behind the rear axle of your vehicle. This particular part number includes the shank for the system. I have attached a review video of this system for you.

This weight distribution system does not come with a hitch ball. I recommend the Curt 2" Trailer Hitch Ball # A-90.

I have also attached an article about weight distribution systems, as well as an article about how to determine your trailer's tongue weight.
