We did a Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs install on a Dodge Ram pickup some time ago with a compressor and a single in cab control. We installed the compressor on top of the drivers side wheel well liner. This location is close to the vehicle battery and pretty much protected from water and road debris so the compressor will last longer and the air lines can be ran easily into the cab to the controller.
When installing the compressor you can mount it just about anywhere you want as long as you take into consideration protection from debris and moisture and ample air flow for the compressor to operate. The choice is ultimately up to you.
If noise is not a consideration, when operating the compressor only, and you have a extended cab pickup I have seen the compressor mounted under the rear seat on the drivers side in the storage area located there. This location provides maximum protection for the compressor, as long as the storage area is not used for other items.
