Are Adapter Bars Required to Load Womens Bikes on the Thule Passage Trunk Mount Bike Carrier

Question:

Im considering the Thule Passage 3 Bike Carrier - Trunk Mount. One of the reviews mentioned a problem using this rack with womens bikes that have a curved frame. the Thule rep who answered the question said that an adapter is required for womens bikes and that it costs $44! I have two womens bikes so thats $88 extra! Are there any trunk mount carriers designed to accommodate womens bikes with out adding a third again to my cost?? I need a 3-bike mount for a 2006 Toyota Highlander. I used to have a hitch-mounted rack for a Subaru Forrester, and I just tilted the womens bikes to get them on the rack. Would this work with the Thule rack? Thanks.

If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005 as a lower cost alternative.

This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance. I have to use these adapters and without them my wife's bike would be at a severe angle and I would not be able to load my son's bike at all. I have linked a video showing how the adapter works.

You might be able to load the bikes the way that you described but like I mentioned above the bike angle will be awkward and can lead to ground clearance issues.

There isn't a 3-bike trunk mount carrier that would not require adapter bars for certain bikes.
