A common misconception is that rear hatches can be opened with trunk mount bike racks still installed. Any trunk mount bike rack manufacturer that we have spoken with say the exact opposite even if the bikes aren't loaded. By keeping the rack installed you could damage the rack and/or your vehicle. That is why the instructions for the Thule Passage # TH910XT on your 2018 Subaru Forester state to position the lower arm on the upper tier of the bumper. If you are wanting needing a way to carry 2 bikes while still maintaining rear hatch access you will need either roof mount bike racks or a hitch mount bike rack. I can assist you in choosing your best options if you want to go either route.

When you are locating the Fit Dial setting in the instructions you will need to line up the year/make/model of your vehicle and then go over to the Fit Dial setting that is in the same box of your bike rack. I have attached a clip from the instructions where I highlighted that you need to use the 10 setting on the Fit Dial.

Please also note that in the instructions they point out that those bottom straps and clips need to be mounted to the side of the lower arm (see attached photo).

If you have any other questions or you would like to use a roof rack or hitch rack option just let me know and I can help you out further.
