Installing Converted 4-Pole/7-Way on RV With Unconverted 6-pole Square Trailer Connector
Question:
I am having the same issue that this guy previously asked and the answer is not a solution. The turn signals are completely separate from the break lights. Vehicle/rv has square 6 connection: White - ground Blue - aux battery charge or electric break Brown - runing lights Yellow - left turn no break Green - right turn no break Red - break / stop light. How do you convert that into a standard 4 pin? Is it even possible with the stop light being completely separate from the turn signals? //////////Previous post: We have a 2004 Monaco RV with a 6 pole square socket. We have a utility trailer to pull our toys that has a 4 pole flat plug. We are unable to find an 6 pole square to 4 pole flat adapter. ///////// Reply: The 6-Way square trailer connector is not used by a lot of trailer manufacturers. A lot of Jayco trailers may have them but mostly you come across the 4-Way flat, like what you have on your trailer, and the 7-Way blade for RV applications. What I recommend is to convert the 6-Pole on the Monaco to a 4-Way. You can do this very easily by removing the 6-Way plug, and then testing the wires for function using a circuit tester like # 3808 if needed before installing them in a new 4-Way, # HM48030. The 4-Way vehicle end functions will be oriented in the 4-Way as follows: Exposed pin = ground white wire on harness Next pin = running lights brown wire on harness Third pin = left turn and brake lights yellow wire on harness Last pin = right turn and brake lights green wire on harness The other wires can be taped up and stowed out of the way. Since so many more applications use the 4-Way flat, this will be the ideal option. But, if you do not want to remove the 6-Way on the RV, you can make your own adpater. You will start with the 6-Pole Square Trailer Wiring Connector Kit, # 37995. Plug the trailer end into the connector on your RV, then use a circuit tester like # 3808 if needed to test each wire. Next, use the vehicle end in the Quick FixTM, # 48195, and the wires as described above. The other wires you can tape up because they will not be used by the 4-Way. Once you have made all of the connections you will have made your own adapter.

You'll need a taillight converter to combine the right turn, left turn and brake lamp signals into two circuits (right turn/brake and left turn/brake) for the trailer.
First, I'd remove the existing 6 pin square connector on the RV, as it's an obsolete connector. Use the taillight converter, part # C59236, and install its inputs color for color to the RV harness where you cut off the 6-pin connector. Yellow converter wire to yellow wire on harness, green to green, brown to brown, red to red, etc.
I'd recommend installing a trailer connector adapter, part # 37185 which would provide not only a converted 4-pole, but also a 7-way trailer connector. The 37185 would plug into the 4 pole provided by the C59236, and would have 4 additional wires. The white wire would ground to the motorhome frame. The black wire is for a 12-volt power feed circuit for any trailer mounted accessories that might need power, like a break away kit. If you don't need this circuit, you can bundle the wire up and tuck it out of the way. If you need the circuit, the wire would be extended to the positive battery terminal through a 40 amp circuit breaker, part # 9510. The blue wire would carry the output voltage from a brake controller, it can be bundled up out of the way if it's not needed. The purple wire is usually used for reverse lights. If not needed, this circuit could also be taped up out of the way.
