The first thing you will want to check is the running light circuit on the tow vehicle trailer connector. Use a circuit tester such as # PTW2993 to test the running light pin while the tow vehicle headlights are on. If there is no power on the vehicle side, then that would be why the trailer running lights are not working. There could be a tow package fuse, loose wire, or corroded trailer connector on the vehicle.
If the vehicle connector is working fine then it could be a bad ground, corroded trailer side connector, or a wiring issue on the trailer. Make sure that the vehicle side and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. The main connector grounds should be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces.
The light grounds should also be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. If there is anything between a light ground and the metal trailer frame or if the trailer has an aluminum frame, tilt bed, or folding tongue, any of these things can interrupt the ground. Running jumper wires from the light grounds to the main trailer connector ground can help.
Inspect the wiring again only this time check for any pinched wires because a break may not be obvious. The brake and turn signal lights are on the same circuit but the running lights are by themselves on one circuit.
