Leland 7910 Sidewinder and Compatible Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation

Question:

I have a 5th wheel trailer with a 7910. My trailer has an oversized cap that limits my turning in my 66inch bed, beyond what would be normal limits in a shorted. I have a sliding hitch but I cannot make some pretty standard turns on the road without risking coming in contact with the cab corners. I would like to use a longer king pin mount, but I was told that my Curt Q20 hitch was not compatible with any sidewinder. I checked the specs on the Reese 5th AB E7920 which obviously is for the leland 7920 and it would give me about 1 1/2inch more extension and I believe a world of better turning if this part is indeed compatible. My current 7910 is GVWR at 18,000, the Reese is 21k. I called your staff today and they were unable to provide an answer, in fact they actually tried to sell me the sidewinder with a wedge. I double checked with Curt and they assured me that my cushioned hitch could fail unexpectedly if combined with a sidewinder. That might be good info to pass along to them as well. Thanks for your assistance!

You are correct, the Curt Q20 hitches are not compatible with Sidewinders due to the wide jaw opening of the hitches.

Your best option is going to be to replace your current hitch with a stationary one compatible with a Sidewinder. The Reese Select Plus part # RP30928 would be an excellent choice. I one time asked our contact at Sidewinder what fifth wheel hitch would work the best with a Sidewinder and this is the one he recommended. The correct wedge would be the part # SWW-01.

The part # ST400-5AS16K that you referenced would be the correct Sidewinder to replace your Leland 7910 so I would recommend that as well.
