Replacement Special Trailer Tires in Size 5.30-12 for Small Boat Trailer  

Question:

Hi, Im towing my small jet boat to florida In july and wanted to put new tires on the trailer. It currently has 5.3 0 12 4 ply sport trax brand. Would i be better to put on 6 ply or stay with the 4?

Thank you for the photo of your trailer tire which does show some serious dry rot. You are smart to get new tires before your trip.

We offer both bias ply tires only and tire-with-wheel products in your 5.30-12 size; both can be seen on the linked page.

You want to select your new tires based on the weight capacity of your trailer axle. The tire Load Range is its weight rating. Your tire size is offered in load ranges B, C and D. Choose the tires so that you have some safety margin in the weight capacity. The actual ply count or ply rating does not matter so much as load range. For a LR D tire, good for 1250-lbs at 105-psi, we have # AM10068.

Tires that are operated below their maximum weight capacity tend to run cooler and so they also tend to last longer. Always keep any trailer tire fully inflated to the maximum cold psi pressure noted on the tire sidewall.
