Trailer Hitch for a 2006 Chevy Suburban 2500 8.1 Liter V8 Towing 10,000 Pound Trailer

Question:

I have a 2006 Chevy Suburban 3/4ton/ 4WD/ 8.1L. The rating on the factory installed hitch is 500 lbs tongue / 5,000 trailer weight. I have a weight distribution hitch, my trailer is 24foot w/10,000lb rating. Do I need to up grade the factory hitch?

Since your 2006 Chevy Suburban trailer hitch is only rated for 5,000 pounds you will have to upgrade the hitch to tow your 10,000 pound trailer. The owners manual for your 'burban states that the 3/4 ton 2500 series with 8100 V8 and 3.73 rear end gear ratio has a capacity of 10,300 pounds gross trailer weight. With the 4.10 rear end it is rated for 12,000 pounds.

Either way the capacity does exceed the gross trailer weight though if you have the 3.73 gears it will be close and you will want to be sure to stay under that 10,300 pounds.

Curt trailer hitch # C15324 is rated for 2,400 pounds tongue weight and 16,000 pounds gross trailer weight (you would still be limited to the capacity of the vehicle). It is the most popular hitch with enough capacity that also fits your Suburban.

Since you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # EBMK2416. It comes with a ball mount with a 3 inch rise or 4 inch drop, 2 balls, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.

I am assuming that the Suburban already has a trailer connector but if it doesn't you can add a 4-Way flat using # C59496.
