Effect on Trailer Ride Quality When Using a 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter Like # CAB-C5G

Question:

I read one of your Expert Replies: A gooseneck adapter that is designed for towing a fifth-wheel trailer, like the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter, # CAB-C5G , is normally used when a person already has a gooseneck trailer hitch installed in the truck and needs to tow both gooseneck and 5th wheel trailers. These adapters are a good solution, but do not provide as nice a ride when towing a fifth wheel trailer. by Bob G Why would the ride be any different?

Any type of adapter used to couple different types of trailers and hitches - like the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter # CAB-C5G - will have an effect on ride quality because it introduces additional connection points. In the sense that "the best adapter is no adapter" additional mechanical junctions will always lead to more potential for noises, vibration, jarring and chucking.

I do not mean to suggest that such an item is not suitable for short-distance transport trips to move a trailer from point A to point B - that's exactly what they're designed for - but for long-term use and long-distance towing they will not deliver the same ride quality as a towing system without an adapter.

Some adapters also have the effect of increasing the stresses put on the trailer's frame. Some trailer makers do not recommend using these devices. You might take look at the linked article on towing adapters. This explains the various types available and their relative advantages and disadvantages.

The best way to pull a 5th wheel trailer with a gooseneck-equipped truck is to install a replacement trailer pin box called a Goose Box. The link at right will show you both such items that we offer. This is the only type of adapter that does NOT cause increased stress on the trailer frame.
