V-Bar Icebreakers

V-Bar Icebreakers

These chains are outstanding in serious winter weather conditions because the V-bar studs can bust through intense ice and packed snow. So, you'll be able to get to work and back home again even in the toughest weather. You can also use them if you ever go off-roading and end up in a mud-digging situation. These chains are going to help give your vehicle purchase to pull out and keep moving.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Drape chains over tire.

2. Drape the chain over the tire, ensuring that the V-bar studs face away from the tire.

Make connections

3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the front of the tire, then clamp the lever to fasten extra chain links and keep them from flapping as you drive.

Attach optional tensioners

4. Insert the included tool into the cam and twist to tighten the sidewall chain. Twist as many cams as it takes to get a tight fit.

Attach optional tensioners

5. Drive forward 2-3 vehicle lengths and recheck the chain tension. Tighten any loose cams. If needed, rubber adjusters (sold separately) can be used to help give you a tight fit. Make sure the hooks on the adjusters face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

The chains bite into hard packed snow. Was able to move an 8k trailer that probably would not have been possible otherwise. The connecting link is great. The cam wrench has a little to be desired, a tee style would provide more control for easier tightening. I had to choke these chains up to the tightest link for my stock tires, I wonder if they will be loose as the tires wear. The chains seemed very loose after removing the spider straps. They made the ride very rough at 5mph, these are definitely for off road.

These are the best chains, hands down. I live off grid in an area where people constantly lose their vehicles or get them stuck. I need these half of the year and I've never been stuck, even with multiple feet of snow and ice. For most people I don't think you'll ever need replacement parts but for people like me they're easy to repair, diagnose, tighten etc. It's worth noting that you need some grip strength to tighten the cams, I haven't had issues but if you're a woman I'd recommend the "T" shape cam tightener etrailer sells so you can torque it better. It's important to note that these work great with even super knobby tires, so don't shy away if you need this style of chain.

I can't recommend these enough, if you're a road traveler this is not the product for you but if you're on the farm, using this for a plow truck on an icy dirt road, going up snowy hills, going offroad in the snow, are camping in snowy wilderness etc this is for you. Just make sure you don't spin, because you can easily snap cross bars this way.

etrailer is fantastic, as an aside and has been super helpful.

Ok, new to chains here. These came extremely fast over the Christmas holiday. I have a cabin in north central PA on top of a mountain. Two weeks ago I came up the mountain and it had snowed during my stay. It was absolutely terrifying going back down the dirt road, I had zero traction, took me an hour to go 2 miles, a neighbor had plowed, but it was like sledding in my vehicle. Up this week with chains with v bar, night and day, it's like driving on road with no snow, no sliding, complete control, what an amazing difference, absolutely recommend these chains. I ordered for 265/60/18 but also have a truck that is 265/75/16 that these are rated to fit, they do, but will need the spider bungee as they are sort of loose on the 16 rim.

Nissan Titan

Nice chains for my plow truck. This truck doesn't go on the road - I only use it as a yard truck. Chains were easy to install. I picked up the Titan multiarm tire chain adjusters for light truck (3/4 ton). Drove with the new set up on. They will work fine - I will not get stuck. The higher profile.of the chain cleats causes the vehicle to rumble as its driven, but I can live with that. As usual, great customer support.

2018 Nissan Titan

I absolutely recommend the Titan Snow Chains with cams - ladder pattern - V Bar Links. They are beautiful, cost less than half of what local venders quoted, arrived early with the free delivery. The only improvement I can recommend would be for etrailer.com to find a U.S. source instead of the one they use in China.

@Bridger Sorry to hear that! Not sure how that happened, but the most common cause for failure is running the chains on dry pavement...

Ford F-150

The chains were very easy to put on and adjust for tightness. I have a 2023 Ford F150 lariat and the clearance on the back tires is enough that they can be used on the back. I am not sure they would clear the front. Highly recommend.

They are nice chains, and they arrived very quickly, so I'll give 1 star for that despite the fact they don't come with a reuseable bag. But the other 4 stars come off because they don't actually fit the tire sizes they indicate they fit. My tires are 265/75-16 on a 2006 Chevy 2500HD. I installed the chains, using the closest link available for the inside and outside catch, then cycled all four cams, and the chains are still too loose. In fact, I could cycle the cams by hand, and didn't even need to use the special tool, that's how loose they are. You can clearly see in the included picture how much slack there is at the keeper since it's hanging lose instead of taunt against the tire like is should be. You can also see that it is connected to the closest link, and that all four cams are tightened. You can even make out the tire size. This isn't an installation problem, or an operator error. This is a "they don't fit what they say they fit" problem. I tried calling etrailer for assistance, but other than verify I had the correct chains for my tire size, all they could do was suggest I get the rubber bungee cord things.

So now I have the outside rubber things coming to try and take up the slack if I actually need to use them during my trip next week. Tire chains specified for a given tire size range should fit. These don't, but I don't have enough time to change them out and have no confidence anything else I ordered would fit better anyway. Later when I have time, I'll remove one of the laterals so I can tighten the chains more, but for $150 I would expect a product that fits. Buyer beware...

I will have our customer service team reach out to you. There can be differences in how a chain will fit on a certain tire size depending on the tire manufacturer. A tire made by Goodyear in a 265 75 R16 size will be slightly different then the same size made by Kenda for example. We always recommend using a set of rubber adjusters with these chains to ensure a snug fit. If your rim size is 14 to 24 then we recommend part # TCMA2.

When I got them I installed one to see how much was involved in putting them on. I am 74 year old. It took me to tries but it was very hard. I would estimate about 15 to 20 minutes to put a set on. They tighten up good.

For a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic with 4x4 with stock 275/60 R20 tires.
Summary: Good on Rear Tires NOT on Front Tires.
They fit good on the rear tires but I do not recommend for the front tires. Unless I'm installing them wrong there is not enough clearance between the inner front sidewall and suspension components (Steering Knuckle and Upper Control Arm). It would be nice to have on both front and rear axles though.

Thank you for your review! I saw the problem you mentioned in your review and looked it up in the owners manual for a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic. Where they talk about the use of tire chains, they only recommend that tire chains be used on the rear axle tires only. Just wanted to pass along what I found out as a reason for TC2828CAM not fitting the front tires. Hopefully this helps!

by:

I freaking love these chains! Easy enough to put on and tighten. A little rough riding on the road, but offroad they are awesome! I highly recommend these chains!

by:

I just tried the chains out yesterday for the first time. My first impression is that they are a really nice set of chains.

I did have to remove some length for my tires (265/70r16), I cut 4 links, basically removing the last step of the ladder on each chain. Before that there was too much extra chain in the way, it made it harder to get the chains on and I would have had to bungee everything down so it wouldn't wrack my fender. That much was perfect for my tires and I still have room for adjustment. I could add the extra length back on for bigger tires with a set of connecting links.

It is great that they have 4 cams on each tire for getting any slack out, really leaves you a lot of adjustment. These things always have to be rolled over a few times and tightened down again. The main hook on the outside is nice and long, the chains are sturdy and the stainless coating or whatever it is seems very tough. I took them up and down the gravel road a bit and didn't notice any wear at all afterward. Didn't need bungees, hit 45mph and felt smooth. Trolled around in the snow a bit and even without any weight in the back of my truck I could climb a decent grade in ~8 inches of snow.

My brother has a pair of older chains (no Vbar)and they seem to work pretty good in the deep snow on a lake. So I decided to buy a set and tried these....and the very first time using them they were put to the test. Needless to say, I was extremely impressed with how well they worked. Installation for the first time was easy. Having the Cam tighteners is a must have....simply tighten them up and your good to go. No adjusting or tweaking the chains to get them right. The Vbars kept on "eating" into the snow and ice. Basically, as long as the vehicle is not hung up on snow and ice, they will keep chugging along and keep you moving. Even helped pull another truck off the lake that got stuck going through the hardpack of a snowmobile trail (Which if anybody knows, is hard to drive on when you're breaking through the hardpack). The first day of use was as much if not the most harsh use they will get and they worked excellent. No signs of any chain breaking. I would definitely recommend these chains.

I live on an unpaved road 7 miles in high on a mountain which ices up nightly. Winter starts here mid October and ends mid May. These ice chains are needed to get me home a few nights a week during the winter months. They fits as described. I questioned Angela at customer service if these chains wold fit “E” load tires. She told me they would and they do. I like etrailer as my goto accessory store for my HD Sierra, Tundra and Tahoe Z71. The videos are very informative except I haven’t been able to install the chains without moving the vehicle. I need to roll it either forward or back to complete the install. Please see photos.
Thank You for your Professionalism at etrailer

I use these chains more for climbing the muddy hill I have as a driveway and believe me, they have got to be strong to put up with mud and rocks on a daily basis. So if you buy them for snow, they will exceed your expectations.
I highly recommend these.

by:

had to cut a section out they were too long for my 265 70/17 but once fitted properly they seem to fit well used them once to plow with so far so good

by:

I have not had a chance to try them yet but examining them closely, the quality looks excellent and I am very confident that they will do the job!

by:

I had no problems installing them to make sure they fit my tires. Just wish they had a reusable bag to put them in. Will be taking them elk hunting in Wyoming, hopefully I don't have to use them. If I do, I'm sure they will get the job done. The only reason I don't give them a 5 star is because I haven't used them.

by:

They are great chains but you have to, have to, have to, I can’t express it enough, buy the rubber bungee cord hooks to make it tighter and keep the chains on, I tried without it at first and any speed over 8mph and they might fall off, I have a 2018 F150 and with both products I can drive up to 35 to 40 mph without any issues even though I think that speed is not recommended, I just wanted to see what would happen. It’s a Texan thing, I’ve used these in Colorado and New Mexico and are perfect

These chains work great and look better. We were driving to a trailhead where the road turned into deep hard snow with 1.5 foot deep ruts. We couldn’t proceed because of downed trees. The snow was hard enough that the truck got stuck in 4WD low because it kept digging itself in. Thank goodness I had the chains because once I put them on I was able to grip and turn around with no issue.

Great value. Very easy to install. I did it up in the mountains before a steep section of trail. I used the rubber tensioners and it was super easy. Seems like price has gone up though; still a good value.

Received the chains quicker than expected. Easy to install in the garage on a dry warm day.! Should be reasonably easy to install when needed in the snow. FORD recommends no chains for your pick up. However, etrailer demonstrated that they can be used, I appreciate the extra effort they went through. Always need chains in the mountains during hunting season.

This information should be in your owner's manual. More than likely it is the rear axle. If you let me know what vehicle and tire size you have I would be happy to make a recommendation. I have attached a link to all of our tire chains for your reference.

Yes, they will. I checked with Titan and the item # TC2828CAM will fit a 31x10.5x15 tire. That tire size is equivalent to a 267/76/R15 tire. These come in a pair and you'll need one set per axle.

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for 2006 GMC Sierra with Tire Size 265/70R17
For a set of cables that fit your tire size of 265/70R17 we have the TC2028 which would fit and work well. Or for a set of chains with similar clearance requirements the Titan Alloy Snow Chains # TC2326 would be a great option too. So the other set of chains you mentioned part # TC2828CAM is V-bar style chain which will help quite a bit but it's geared towards icy conditions. For deep snow square links are the best as they cut through deep snow the best. So for that the part # TC2228SCAM...

You'll want to check the operator's/owner's manual for your Case Skid Steer for any guidance regarding use of tire chains. The manufacturer of any vehicle, whether its a passenger car or a piece of heavy equipment, gets to decide if, when and how tire chains will be used on their vehicle. In...

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for Tire Size 275/60-20 of 2021 GMC Sierra 1500
Our tire chain fitguide is based on the tire sizes we know vehicles come with and it does not factor in the manufacturer of the vehicle's restrictions based on clearance. So for your 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 that has the tire size of 275/60-20 you'd want the K-Summit chains part # KON24FR which is only option that doesn't drape over inside of the tire sidewall so there would be no clearance issues at all. The other chains you mentioned would be too thick to fit properly.
