Video Transcript for Rhino-Rack RT-Style Roof Rack Tracks Review

What's going on, everybody Adam here with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at this really cool track system. It is the Rhino-Rack RT-Style roof rack track system. Some vehicles, we don't have the option to put a roof rack on the roof. Kind of like our Odyssey, we have here. Usually it's because of sliding doors, but there are some other instances, where we aren't gonna be able to put a roof rack on here.

But with these rails, it's going to allow us to do that. We can do a two-bar setup, to get a lot of accessories on our roof. With the Rhino-Rack kit, we have two different cross bars to pick from, and two different colors for each. Or we can just go with the arrow cross bars. It's gonna be a little bit quieter up on your roof, a little bit more aerodynamic.

And then, we're gonna have the HD bars as well. So pick whichever ones you think is gonna be best for you. In my opinion, the arrow bars are typically the ones that are gonna work with most of your accessories. On the one side, we're gonna have an open little slot, so we don't have to remove anything, to put in our accessories. And with our towers that we're using, for the arrow bar system, all of your accessories are gonna slide in this little end cap here.

So you don't have to remove anything, which is nice. And it goes all the way along the whole entire track. So you really find out exactly where you wanna put your bars. And it's gonna accept a block that is about 1 inch by 13/16 of an inch. The Rhino-Rack system is awesome, when it comes to taking your towers and your crossbars off.

All you need is your key. You're gonna unlock this, and look at that. All you gotta do is pull these in, pull this out, and we're gonna have a little end cap here. If you wanted to take these off, all you have to do is just take the little tool, loosen it, and slide it all the way off. But I do not mind having these on here, cause it's gonna be a lot quicker than your other option, which is Thule. The Thule ones, the towers are gonna take a little bit longer to take off, but they won't leave this little bottom section. So that's kind of all up to you. I like having these here, just because it makes for adjusting the whole entire roof rack a lot quicker. And also, I just don't mind the look. I think it kind of looks cool. So, if I we're to go with one of the two kits, you have an option for, whether it's a Thule or the Rhino-Rack, I would definitely go with the Rhino-Rack. So if we wanted to go back to the bare track system, it would just loosen it up, and then you can just go ahead and slide it out and we're done. So, I think that's also gonna be quicker, than the Thule option, which is why I really like the Rhino-Rack. Of your two options, both the Thule and the Rhino-Rack, the track system is gonna be a flat black. Which I think that's the best looking, in my opinion. I don't know if it's just because of our white car, but it does look really, really good. And that's pretty much it, for a look at the Rhino-Rack RT-Style roof rack track system..

I give 3.5 because I don't have much experience with other racks using a track system. This was my first track system. The install was the absolute worst part. First time drilling into your car roof is terrifying. I put the install off for months. Plus I had to buy a special pneumatic pop rivet gun that was another 100 on top. Wasn't very happy about that. Minor hang ups with the install but nothing too serious. They've done well holding up my rack carrying four kayaks and the adjustability came in handy early on but now I know my desired spread, not likely to change ever again. The butyl tape seems to keep any water from coming into the car. I'm not aware of any water damage or wet spots.

Arrived in good time and good shape. Now, the task of installation.

I needed to get this order delivered on a tight schedule, and etrailer came through for me. Everything as ordered and delivered quickly. Great buying experience (as usual)

by:

Outstanding finish. Super strong

by:

had to drill the hole to clean out the powder coating to get the rivet to go into the hole

I was building a rack for the skin on frame sailboat I built. I needed a crossbar on the top of my truck but the tracks were longer than I needed. I ended up cutting one of the tracks in half and redrilling the holes for the end caps on the cut ends. It was a little difficult to bend the track along the curved profile of my 2019 Ram Classic roof and get the holes where I needed. It says not to use a pop riveter but I didn't have a pneumatic one and have very good grip strength. I needed every bit of my grip strength in both hands to make it work but it did, in fact work. I used tape to cover the track around the rivets and prevent scratches because when the rivets pop, it's a little out of control. Overall it turned out well. I ended up machining a custom crossbar and T nuts due to having a machine shop on my garage.

Wish they had a kayak rack to mount to areo bars

Product itself is fantastic, I strongly recommend.

I have had these on for more than a year. Most common use case is carrying a 60lb, 16' long canoe.

I installed with rivets into the roof sheet metal. No issues at all with any rivets coming loose, and zero leakage. I use it with a Yakima crossbars with the quick release mounts. The feet are bolted to the tracks. The crossbars just click into the feet. They take literally less than a minute to attach or remove. I've had a few roof rack systems and this is by far the best.

I used the etrailer videos for the installation and they were more than enough. The riveting was nerve-wracking on the first one, but actually very simple. I suggest really taking your time to assure parallel. This can be tricky depending on your roofline. I marked a centerline down my roof and set the tracks based on that.

The only downside I have run into is not at all a fault in the tracks. Because they rivet into the roof sheet metal, it's susceptible to a bit of flex. I see this under the front of the tracks when I crank down on the bowline of the boat. That's a very large lever pulling down on the rack into the roof sheet metal. No lasting issues, I can just see the metal move.

Another small thing to note is that if your roof is curved where the front or real of the rail lands, the plastic end cap might have a small gap under it. It's not itself held down to the roof, it just slots into the track. I have a small gap on mine and it's not a functional issue at all.

I like the Rhino Rack RTV track because is allows Vortex Aero cross bars to be easily moved and removed. However the appropriately sized rectangular track nuts (M6 24x21x5 part No. N057) used to mount items to the rack are no longer available or manufactured. Consequently RTV track cannot be easily used to secure additional items. Rhino Rack is unable to offer a solution other than returning the wrong sized track nuts so I will manufacture my own attachment nuts. After drilling 18 holes in the roof of my new car and installing the RTV track and cross bars, the lack of compatible nuts was a big disappointment. The product should not be sold if components are not available.

by:

The rivets are way too small and they popped out from the roof top leaving holes on the roof of my van. Totally dissatisfied and angry.

by:

Nice track.

by:

the rails worked great on 8' topper. I used my own SS screws not the rivets supplied. I only gave a 4 because it was missing one of the end caps. :(

by:

I bought these racks for my Ford Transit and I couldn't be happier with the racks or the service from trailer. The rhino racks added a nice touch to an awkward looking van with its great looks and perfect functionality. Reading reviews about other racks making howling noises while driving made me a little hesitant , but am pleased to say, no noise whatsoever. I've added a basket to the racks and everything has worked perfectly. We do a lot of traveling,(2 adults,4 kids, 3 dogs) and the racks have provided exactly what we needed. Thanks etrailer for the best price and great service

by:

The entire rack system (tracks, feet, aero crossbars, ladder straps, and load stops) installed and worked great for the intended use. Also, the service from etrailer was excellent.

The only drawback to this system is the necessity of purchasing a pneumatic rivet gun ($40) for mounting the tracks, but hey, it's a custom rack and i ended up with a cool tool.

Thanks.

sturdy, coated steel or stainless 5mm (3/16) rivets included to reduce corrosion chances.
problem encountered: air riveter required (readily available to borrow or purchase ) due to strength of rivets , the problem is all common rivet guns are too large in diameter to fit into the rail "valley" so the tip is flush with the surface of the hole which is required for proper fastening. In some rhino rack instructional videos these are clearly made with enlarged spaces to fit rivet gun . are these really rhino rack or knock off ? bad production run ? I solved the problem because I have access to a machine shop and was under time pressure due to a planned trip but most customers would be in a mess with no way to solve this issue.
that said , after several extra hours of effort I successfully mounted the rails and new pioneer rack and roof top tent on my naked metal roof and i am happily able to go down the road.
ps
Shiela was wonderful! fantastic customer service ,all other rhino products received from e trailer were great, e trailer was speedy and very helpful!

by:

I don't use it as often as I would like but after a year it is still attached and works as intended. The rubber strips to reduce noise came partially loose, but with some fiddling they seem to be hanging in there now. For my vehicle at least, I used a professional (local auto shop) to install as I was not going to take a drill to my car.

by:

This company performs in very timely manner, informs of shipping and delivery, offers more at any juncture. Exemplifies service. They are above and beyond most others.

by:

Super solid track system and looks great. Good instructions, I followed them to a T, including purchase of metric bits and punch. Specific to my Nissan Frontier crew cab truck. A little nerve racking drilling 18 holes in the roof but turned out fine. No leaks. Works great with my Yakima landing pads and rack. No interference with sunroof components in the roof. I used a butyl mastic tape in place of the recommended sealant as it wasn’t available in the US. Nice folks at etrailer helped me with that! I probably didn’t need to but I smeared a bit of silicone on top of every rivet head inside the track once it was installed. The end caps fit nice and flush on the roof unlike the Yakima end caps that will have a gap if there is any curvature in the mounting surface.

by:

great, service was very responsive and hands on, they don't make it a mystery. Very helpful in solving my problem, roof rack. They really found the solution, spending time reserching for the correct product. Thanks

by:

Good product - did exactly what I needed it to.

by:

Drove over the mountain to go biking last weekend and it did a great job. I will definitely recommend it to family and friends.

by:

Excellent rails. Rugged, better than OEM Rover rails by a vast margin and etrailer is awesome. Great service, prices and shipped fast/well. Thank you!

  • Do You Have Any Yakima Roof Tracks Available to Fir my Yakima Roof Rack?
I have an alternate solution to the shipping time problem. I looked at the other sizes of Yakima rail systems, and they all will have about the same shipping time as the Yakima 54" Tracks for Roof Racks # RRRTV148 that you ordered. With that being said, another solution is to purchase the Rhino-Rack RT-Style Roof Rack Tracks - Rivet Mount - 58" Long - Qty 2 # RRRTV148. However, this track is not compatible with your Yakima setup. If you choose to go this route, here is what you will need:...

I confirmed with the engineers at Rhino-Rack that any standard rivet gun will work as long as the end attachment (the part that you place inside the Rhino-Rack RT Tracks # RRRTV148) is 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch. If you are looking for a complete crossbar system, I would be happy to suggest you compatible feet and crossbars if you provide the year/make/model of vehicle. That information will help me with determining the best crossbar length for you.

  • Can I Use the Rhino-Rack Aero Bar Rack # Y02-480B on a 1995 Ford Aerostar with No Headliner?
Great question! Typically, we do not recommend using the Rhino-Rack Aero Bar Roof Rack # Y02-480B with vehicles with normal metal roofs because the bolts that drill into the roof actually protrude on the other side. The other end requires a nut that fastens the tracks to the roof. Technically, since you have a stripped metal roof, the rack would work great for you. However, if you plan to ever put a headliner on your 1995 Ford Aerostar, the headliner would have to cover that bolt/nut. If...

I may have a solution for you, however I don't recommend trimming the Rhino-Rack RT-Style Roof Rack Tracks like the 58 Inch # RRRTV148 that you referenced. These strips do feature pre-cut holes for the rivets so trimming any portion of the units will essentially change the way they are meant to attach. You would also need to make sure that the cuts are perfectly straight up and down so the end caps will fit properly. We do have shorter lengths available, such as the 36-1/4 inch # RRRTS540,...
