Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution, and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control, and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring airline installation

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Air Spring Construction

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have 4 layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. No drilling required.

After a year of use including 3 months in Alaska, these Air helper springs have worked flawlessly. They give me just enough lift to level out my truck with over 800lbs of trailer tongue weight and 500lbs in the bed. I have individual adjustments on my Ride-rites and I haven't needed to make the pressure different from side to side. I'm now considering adding an adjustable air system that can be operated from inside the truck.

by:

the airbags have held up very nicely over a year. this is my second pair on two vehicles and will not be without them. This system is redundancy for your current springs and should not replace them. I really appreciate them when going over a bump like railroad tracks, they absorb the shock nicely.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTD

Awesome springs. I have the stock Rancho shocks on my Silverado and they are terrible. I then added Timbren helper springs and towing was better but the daily ride was terrible and the slapping when the spring met the axle was horrible. Finally I added the Firestone bags and OMG what a terrific all around ride. While towing and while daily driving the ride is the way the truck should be from the factory! Install was about an hour and a half and was/is pretty straight forward. I opted not to use the cheap valve bracket and went through the bumper for a clean look that was easy to access.

Product is still fantastic BUT you must know that these bags do leak and I have a reminder monthly to air them back up to the 10-15lbs that I prefer when unloaded. I also removed the push on connectors and opted for DOT approved type valves and the leaking is now minimized. I opted to go with manual vs an air pump for simplicity sake and do understand that a pump would eliminate the need for monitoring.

@Derek When you insert the air lines into the bags or into the Schrader valve assemblies, it's crucial that the cut made on the air line is clean (not jagged) and is perfectly perpendicular, otherwise you'll get leaks. Using a tubing cutter like # AL10530 will ensure that you get a perfect cut every time.

by:

It's good. Hard wear is really bad. Bolts under sized and way to short, could not get full nut on bolts.so I used my own.bracket are very well built and fit nicely. All said, I would buy ot again.wish I would have taken photos but to late now.

after a 3 month trip across the US into alaska across many rough roads Im very glad to have installed these. they really take a lot of abuse and helped the truck carry the7000lb load. I stand by my comment of the hardware the bolts should be upgraded to a larger size. that being said I would strongly recommend these to anyone looking to upgrade suspension on a truck

by:

Very easy instructions and went on easy. Do not hesitate to purchase. No drilling or modification needed like other brands.

by:

What a difference this had made in towing our camper!! Easy installation, easy operation. Highly recommend this product.

by:

Came on time as they said check contents and found bag was open but all parts were in the box.

by:

Won't fit the GMC 2023 LZ0 Diesel!! I had the Ride-Rites on my 2013 Tacoma, and they worked great! I recently purchased a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 with the DuraMax 3.0 Turbo diesel LZ0 engine. The air bag kit F2609 does not fit this vehicle, even though Firestones WEB site indicated it did. The problem is the upper bracket and airbag contact the exhaust pipe. After calling Firestone, the product specialist knew of this information and are now updating their WEB site. After etrailer confirmed my findings with Firestone about this issue, everything will be returned, and they too will update their WEB site too :(

I'm giving etrailer's Customer Support 5 stars, and Firestone -20 stars for not keeping their WEB site current and knowing about this issue!

by:

All went well with delivery and install ation.

by:

So far working good haven’t pull anything yet. Installed fairly easy. Had to move a brake line. Otherwise happy with it although the bracket that holds the Schrader valve was busted, hoping they will send me a new one. I will.

by:
2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTD

Everything came as shipped and came fast. Parts are high quality and fit as specified. All (4) of the 1-1/2 screws were too short and barely reached through the lower brackets (another 1/4" would be nice). Combined with the fact that there were also several things in the way when trying to put the nuts on to mount the lower bracket (2022 Silverado LTD) it turned the job into a much longer job. Success however was achieved. Haven't tested it with a load yet but when I aired them up to test for leaks it lifted the tail a lot.

by:

Pretty easy install. Keeps the truck level when towing the travel trailer.

by:
2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

What a difference these helper springs made on my truck!! I have a Chevy 1500 and they were lacking in the suspension department. A friend suggested that I get a set of air bags for my truck and I purchased the Firestone helper springs. Total night and day difference. My camper is 9,800 lbs and I can't even tell it's on when I have these pumped up to about 50 psi. Installation wasn't bad, about an hour and a half to install.

by:

These are amazing!! Improved even the standard ride with only 7lbs of air. The truck feels more responsive and stable. Can't wait for Spring to hook up the camper and try them out in application.

by:

Fairly easy install would recommend a lift works great!

These air bags are fantastic !!!! I have towed snowmobiles in trailer too a tractor. My truck sits level and I hardly know theres a trailer behind me. would highly recommend

by:

Excellent product. Easy to install and gives your 1/2 ton much better control of heavy loads by reducing sag, porpoising, and sway. I tow a 7500lb camper and swear by the Firestone Air Bags

by:
2020 GMC Sierra 1500

Delivery was as expected. An inventory of the parts was complete. Packaging of the brackets would have been better. The coating was missing in several areas, due to the fittings not being individually protected. I have not installed the airbags.

by:
2019 GMC Sierra 1500

Perfect fitment! This kit really thought of everything. No hardware i didn't need nor that I felt was missing. I lifted the truck from the frame to give myself more room while working on the ground but even if I hadn't it would have been fine. The only caveat, it's time to go fishing through your junk drawer for all those IKEA Allen wrenches you couldn't dare to throw away, all the hardware consist of Allen head screws. Which is fine if you never plan on removing them again and it's pretty hard to over torque and break a bolt.

by:
2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Good product but cheap Chinese bolts. Do yourself a favor and just go ahead and replace the 3/4” 1/4-20 bolts with grade 8. The ones supplied with the kit are absolutely junk.

As far as installation went, take the wheels off. Use jack stands on the frame and a jack to adjust the rear end height saves a time of time. You don’t need to compress the springs like the directions say. That whole step can be omitted.

by:

This the third set of Firestone airbags I have installed on three different trucks over the past 20 years. You should not use them in place of a weight distribution hitch, or to increase load capacity. I use them to level my vehicle when attached to my trailer. For that purpose they work great. Additionally, I have found etrailer to be an excellent source for about anything trailer related.

by:
2020 GMC Sierra 1500

I honestly ordered this from a competing website. When they could not get the package to me on time I found etrailer.com! Not only was the price slightly better, I had the springs withing 3 days.

Installation was a breeze! I did not put a stop watch on it, and I took my time but it was withing the estimated times on the kit.

I have not done a max pull yet, but I did hook the boat up (7,000 pound wake surf boat), and with 25psi in the bags I was at factory ride height. The ride and control at speed over large bumps was amazing. Bridges on the highway always made be pucker, but with these, the truck handled them like nothing was on the back.

If you are debating if it will make a difference, stop! Buy them now. You will be happy.

by:
2022 GMC Sierra 1500

This is the second truck I have put these on. I am having trouble with this set holding air I have pulled the air lines apart and recut the ends 3 times, but they still leak down from 20lb in about 2 hours.

Since you are losing quite a bit of air pressure quickly, I would say you have a leak happening somewhere. The easiest way see if you have a leak is to mix a spray bottle with soap and water, then spray the soapy water mix on all of the air bag components with the air bags filled up. If you see any bubbles that is a leak. If it is a connection, tightening the fitting will likely stop the leak. Or if it is an air line then you will most likely have to recut the line again. Using a cutter like part # AL10530 can make sure it is a clean cut. If this does not help please let me know.

Good product !!

by:
2021 GMC Sierra 1500

Quality of product is good. Instructions were good and install took about 3 hours. Having a lift and removing the rear tires would make it a little easier, but I just installed the kit with truck on ground in my garage.

Jack

2/14/2023

No issues after a year. I installed as stand alone air, but will be switching to just one common air supplynipple for both bags.

by:

It was easy to install. It only took me 1 1/2 hours to do the job.

  • Will Firestone Air Bags from Other Vehicle Work on 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 with New Brackets
The correct Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Spring Kit for a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 is part # F2609. This kit is designed for 2019+ models. There are many kits which use the same air bags as this kit but if you were to try and reuse these on another vehicle with new brackets and hardware you'd likely end up pay more than you would for an entire new kit which is why I recommend a full replacement.
